Storyline
"Jobless, penniless, and, above all, hopeless, the unmotivated patriarch, Ki-taek, and his equally unambitious family--his supportive whife, Chung-sook; his cynical twenty something daughter, Ki-jung, and his college-age son, Ki=woo--occupy themselves by working for peanuts in their squalid basement-level apartment. Then, by sheer luck, a lucrative business proposition will pave the way for an ingeniously insidious scheme, as Ki-woo summons up the courage to pose as an English tutor for the teenage daughter of the affluent Park family. Now, the stage seems set for an unceasing winner-take-all class war. How does one get rid of a parasite?

"Through an elaborate and ingenious scheme, the poor Kim family manage to trick the affluent and naive Park family into making them their servants. But unbeknownst to the Kims, the Park house harbors a dark secret which could cause the collapse of the newly formed symbiosis" leading to a deadly and terrifying battle for success and to come out on top.

As the poor Kim family struggles to make ends meet in their small apartment in a very poor area with a variety of struggles, they get lucky as their son becomes the English tutor for the very rich Park family's daughter. With this connection, each family member (in the Kim family) secretly begins to form a relationship with the Park family in a very manipulative way. However, when a shocking discovery in the Parks' house in made, it threatens everything the Kims have worked for and will cause a battle between the classes as one tries to overtake the other in a form of parasite (parasite is a metaphor). This unique film is fun and unlike anything else in a sophisticated, yet really intriguing and purposeful way.
Would I Recommend?
Parasite is a really unique film, fun adventure and cautionary tale almost that I think the majority of people would enjoy as the story is so well-written and interestingly developed that it is hard for someone to not like the film. The only thing that some people might dislike is the subtitles as the movie is from Korea and is in Korean, but this isn't a problem for me (it promotes the diversity of the film industry) and really shouldn't prevent anyone from watching this exceptional film as it is special and something the majority of audiences will be in love with. If you are not watching this due to the subtitles, I urge you to get over them and look at the storyline and deeper meaning instead of the dialogue as it is really something fantastic. The writing is one of the best of the year, the acting is great, the directing is really interesting as it unfolds and becomes more broad as the story develops (which is what the story does as well) making this a very superior film for the year that represents how great filmmaking can get. I would recommend this genre-bending and fun movie to anyone that is looking for something different (in a good way) to watch or simply be entertained and shook for two hours, but be warned that this movie rapidly gets very intense and "mutates" as the powerful message it conveys will most likely stay with you for a while.
*Parasite was nominated for 6 Oscars and won 4 at the 2020 ceremony including best director and best picture becoming the first foreign film in history to win best picture
Overall/Review
A truly creative and very original storyline that reflects on real problems facing our societies in terms of the different classes. This movies follows Ki-taek and his family and their struggles of being jobless and desperately needing money in an overall difficult time for everyone. However, when his son Ki-Woo gets a job tutoring a rich family's daughter (the Parks), the movie bends for the first time to a new more comedic but crafted idea about Ki-taek and his family manipulating the Parks to where all four family members work in the house without the Parks even knowing they are related. The storyline is simply done perfectly and in a very entertaining way that will start the movie with a comedy and be very bold in a meaningful and strange way. However, when the Parks go out of town for a night and leave Ki-Taek and his family alone at their house, the story really mutates (like a Parasite) to drama and becomes one of the most original genre-bending movies ever. After the maid that the family fired (because Ki-taek's manipulation) returns to "get something she forgot downstairs," the movie begins a descent into madness of some sort that is hard to describe how beautifully done this transition is. Another major thing in this movie is the directing as it becomes more broad and opens up to the house and the world when the plot develops and builds up on itself which is a smart and great movie to do as it matches with the storyline and helps the audience view the true message of the film vividly and in a unique fashion. The enfolded change that is constantly urged in the film such as when the genre changes from comedy to drama in one scene represents the classes in the world and the major issues that come with them and is something very captivating and shocking to watch that will definitely leave audiences shocked and almost saying what did I just watch in the best way possible, due to this amazing film. There are minor complaints such as the storyline being too familiar at times, or the storyline changing too quickly for the audiences to catch up or even the very hasty beginning, but these are very small compared to the greatness of the storyline and are for the most part not a problem in making this film enjoyable. In the most unexpected ways, through unique writing and expert directing, the acting and ideas all represent the changes in genre, the parasite inside the house oddly and the dramatic turn in the movie that creates this one-of-a-kind dark adventure through society and all its troubles and awful ideas.
