"In the waning months of the Third Reich, the unpopular ten-year old German boy, Johannes "Jojo" Betzler, can't wait to join the ranks of the Nazi Party's youth organization, during an intense training weekend that guarantees to separate the men from the boys. However, after a devastating event in the training earned Jojo his annoying name, Jojo ends up having nothing but time on his hands. Jojo is in for a rude awakening when he accidentally unearths his progressive mother's well-hidden secret and comes face-to-face with a shocking new reality so much different from the hypnotic indoctrinations he absorbed. But, does everything happen for a reason? Are the others always the enemy? In a mad world, devoured by fear an prejudice, is youthful innocence humankind's redemption?

Jojo Rabbit is a satirical twist on Germany in the end of World War II and follows a very brainwashed kid and his desire to be liked and fit in with others that will ultimately be shaken up as he is met with a greater dose of reality and confusion when he meets a Jewish girl that contradicts any of the original things he learned about Jewish people from the awful army. With his mother confusing his views even more due to her more progressive views, Jojo is faced with finding out who he really is and learning about going against the normal when it appears to be wrong. This hilarious and heartbreaking/heartwarming film is an exaggerated and fun insight into life in one of the darkest places in the darkest times in a completely unique and weird but fantastic way.
Would I Recommend?
Jojo Rabbit is a really strange movie that shouldn't work on any levels and should cause some major backlash, but using its expert filmmaking strategy, it somehow succeeds and manages to make comedy out of these horrible situations that also provide factual information into how parts of Germany were in the time. It seems like a stressful movie, but for the most part, it is shockingly more relaxing than other movies and ends up being a funny and great adventure that most audiences will enjoy especially people who love history or satire movies. It has its flaws, but it expertly manages over them and tells an important view at the time and how awful life was becoming in Germany and never hesitates to show them during this time but somehow makes it seem less bad due to the light-hearted and fun tone of the movie. I would recommend this movie to most audiences as it is an amazing journey of self discovery and reflection that will shock most audiences with its unique humor yet impactful story. But, warning, you might cry in the end!
*Jojo Rabbit was nominated for 6 Oscars including best picture and won best adapted screenplay at the 2020 ceremony (Taika Waititi won)
Overall/Review
A dark comedy about World War II is never a description I thought I would hear, but thanks to Taika Waiti's crafted and creative mind, we get a beautiful and entertaining final product. The movie revolves around a young kid named Jojo (cutely played by Roman Griffin Davis) who is obsessed with the Nazi party (wants to fight in it) and even has an imaginary hitler friend (mainly this is a comedic character played by Waititi himself). After Jojo gets injured in training, he is sent back to the city where he does lighter jobs and spends a lot of time at home with his mom, Rosie (played by Scarlett Johansson). However, according to Jojo, his dad is gone fighting in the war, despite some people saying he's a coward and ran away. While at home, Jojo makes a shocking discovery that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their house (played by Thomasin McKenzie) causing Jojo's world to turn and everything becomes different as he learns more about Jewish people and how they are not bad like everyone in the army said. As the war becomes hopeless for Germany and the time becomes darker, Jojo's world continues to turn as he begins to question where his loyalties should stand and is confused over who is right.
All in all, Jojo Rabbit is definitely a comedy that somehow manages to take some of the darkest subjects in the movie and spin it in a comedic way which is why I have great respect for this truly creative writing. Jojo Rabbit is also really a connection between two people at a very desperate and vulnerable time in their life, that go together to support and aid each other. There are a variety of jokes that at least every 5 minuets, someone will be laughing in the movie which I was very impressed with because they managed to take the dark tone and idea and make light of it through comedy in a non-conventional, but entertaining way, creating a dark and semi feel-good movie. This is all done by crafted writing and the new style of directing that Waititi brings, however the acting is also superb as Davis knocks it out of the park playing Jojo and brings a new depth and personality somehow (makes him look really cute also) to a character who loves the German army. Johansson plays Rosie beautifully also as the character herself has a couple of surprise secrets that Johansson makes it look like she's holding in. She also greatly adds the parenting touch to her role and conveys her struggles to not only deal with Jojo, but also deal with money, the girl upstairs and jobs. McKenzie also captures the idea of a trapped Jewish girl incredibly and is probably one of the most funny characters in the movie, followed by some other great and emotional acting from Sam Rockwell and the normally hilarious (yet quite dark) acting by Rebel Wilson, both are part of training the kids.
Another truly unique thing about Jojo Rabbit is the Grimm symbolism such as the exaggerated exercises to train children, the imaginary hitler being so ridiculous like the propaganda used or the army sending 10-year old kids to battle just to die and Jojo being obsessed to show how much they brainwashed the kids who were all innocent. Overall, Jojo Rabbit is a light, dark, but very funny and exceptional movie that combines a dark subject and uses comedy to tell its story for a really unique and powerful movie that will not exactly cause you to be happy as the ending is not 100% happily ever after, but along the ride will give you many laughs to reveal how dark and stupid this part of history was. This also conveys a very entertaining story about not following everyone else and to show a crucial connection that using its expertise, will leave almost every person satisfied and their hearts warmed forever.
