Storyline

"Sadly, after numerous disastrous sessions of martial meditation, New York City's brilliant theatre director, Charlie and the one-time Los Angeles movie actress, Nicole, decided to split up, putting an end to their decade-long marriage. However, divorce is horrible--and as the one-close-knit couple struggles to make it work for the sake of their eight-year old son, Henry--vitriolic accusations and bitter resentment threaten the very foundation of Charlie and Nicole's so called amicable separation. Now, shrewd and absurdly costly lawyers take over, and things are bound to get messy. But, why are love's wounds so deep and cruelly painful? In the end, is love always forever?"

"Marriage Story is Academy Award nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach's incisive and compassionate look at a marriage breaking up and a family staying together. The film stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, Laura Dern, Alan Alda and Ray Liotta co-star."

Marriage Story is the devastating story between Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) and Charlie (Adam Driver) as their marriage begins to unravel and leads to a divorce that begins to spiral out of control, harming both of them greatly in ways they never could have expected. As the outcomes worsen not only for them, but for their son, Henry, the story twists this divorce in deadly ways that will forever change the established relationship between Nicole and Charlie and everything they fought for. It's a hard film to watch and will make most people sob, but is an emotional and greatly realistic analysis into one couple's fight for their family that slowly depicts the idea of what love is and how long it truly can last even during an ugly divorce that will change everything.

Would I Recommend?

Marriage Story is a very professional and well-made movie that examines love and a connection between two people in a way that very few movies have attempted to do as the raw storytelling and writing becomes even more passionate and relatable when the movie develops. The film shares the awful experiences of divorce as well as the longing for what was once a strong marriage between our two main characters as they drift their separate ways and become so angry, it grows in intensity and involves lawyers and other ugly feuds that no one enjoys. That being said, Marriage Story does add an entertaining twist onto the story to make it fit better as a movie and increases the tension/emotions for both the characters that is bound to make most people entertained and devastated. I would recommend it to the vast majority of audiences as it is a great insight into one of the hardest things for a family and describes without holding back in any way how deadly a divorce can become. If you have been a similar situation, it will be extremely tough to watch and you might want to be warned because it will break your heart. Even if you haven't been through the same situation, it is bound to destroy your hearts (especially with the amazing performances) and devastate you to a level of no return so you might want to keep tissues out and prepare yourself because as this movie grows, the intensity and tragedies develop to a great and powerful extent that will leave you shook, happy and upset all at the same time in this fantastically emotional film.

Overall/Review

The most devastating story a person can make into a movie is exactly what Marriage Story represents by being a love story about a divorce. When I say love story, I mean a very different interpretation of people discovering how their love story comes to be and coping with the problems that occurred almost in a reversed way. Noah Baumbach (director) expertly writes the situation to not tell us their love story, but show us through flashbacks and leave the audience to infer based on arguments and conflicts throughout the movie. Following Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nicole's (Scarlett Johansson) struggles through a nasty divorce involving intense (but beautifully acted) lawyers (Laura Dern) and custody battles, this movie will grab your attention and hopes only to leave it with a bittersweet ending. My main complaint with the writing is the lack of entertainment in the beginning as it really feels like more of a contextualization of the story that is all storyline with little development and entertainment. However, this all changes through the rising yet debatable climax which starts character development and the amazing story. The movie shows both character's devastation and secrets that emphasizes the relationship troubles in a way most love stories don't dare to do as it risks the characters and plot, but in this movie it just works perfectly.
Adam Driver plays perfectly the father who constantly suffers from the idea of losing his son and managing work while fighting in the bitter divorce which is all took up a level with Driver's acting that reflects the character in the most believable yet emotional way possible. I truly believe that realistic acting and based on actual situations is twice as hard as playing someone from a different time period or fictional story, therefore Driver really stunned me. The movie clearly favors the father (being based on Baumbach's real divorce), however I really was interested to discover more about Nicole and her emotions throughout the film and desired for it to show more personal struggles that she dealt with. The movie does this halfway but it is definitely needed some balance from the other side to make the story more even and justified. Scarlett Johansson however  plays the character with such depth and even though she doesn't express as much emotion as Driver, she still is one of the most exceptional performances of the year due to the new tone and vibrance she gives the character that really brings her alive . The one fight scene near the end of the film is one of the saddest moments in the movie as both characters collapse not having the other to fall back on, but the acting truly stands out and is masterful at this moment and some of the best I've seen as I felt immersed to their feelings and honestly needed a break after watching that scene due to the intensity. Consequently, what the beginning lacks (way too slow and not enough movement), the middle and ending make up for with their meaningful and thoughtful plots and depictions that really bring this movie up and give it a clear message and purpose. The storyline holds together very well throughout the middle that all rises up to the giant ending which completely releases both of the character's emotions to a climatic masterpiece until settling down to an ending that will make you feel happy and also incomplete but is beautifully crafted, directed, acted and written. Overall, Marriage Story is an intense and immersive story that takes a usual divorce and reflects on how destructive it can be, filled with excellent acting and exceptionally-crafted writing that conveys the emotional truth of a love story being undone that will devastate and captivate audiences in one beautiful and emotional movie.
