Storyline

"April 1917, the Western Front. Two British soldiers are sent to deliver an urgent message to an isolated regiment. If the message is not received in time the regiment will walk into a trap and be massacred. To get to the regiment they will need to cross through enemy territory. Time is of the essence and the journey will be fraught with danger"

"During World War I, two British soldiers--Lance Cpl. Schofield and Lance Cpl. Blake--receive seemingly impossible orders. In a race against time, they must cross over into enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 of their fellow comrades-including Blake's own brother. "

1917 is the breathtaking and intense journey of two soldiers and their impossible task to deliver vital information to troops far away before those troops are faced with a massacre and suffer a great loss of life. Through enemy territory and a variety of environmental obstacles, the two troops must face deadly and unimaginable horrors that will forever change and impact them. Set in the devastation of World War I, 1917 describes this harrowing journey with little restraint and conveys the awfulness to the audience with almost no hesitation.

My Thoughts-Would I Recommend?

For me, 1917 wasn't too intense as it was for others because I felt the storyline, characters and action all overshadow how terrifying the journey and effects really are. The movie is really stunning at first sight and I was very impressed with not only the cinematography but all technical aspects of the movie as from the first scene that included visual effects, I knew that this was going to be something unique and special for the year. In my opinion, the storyline is slow at times and I did crave more from the writing, but I really think that the journey's action and constant motion just distracts the audience from the story in a good way, therefore it never really bothered me as much as I thought it would. I love this movie and think it is very well made and an excellent twist on a usual war movie that reframes the genre and allows the audience to really experience the journey in the most interactive way possible which is something I greatly enjoyed. However, I do agree that this movie is not for everyone and some people might dislike it  and possibly be disturbed by it, but if you are like me and enjoy learning about a very understated time in history through an intense and action-packed journey that will shock you in all the best ways, I definitely recommend watching this intense war thriller.

Overall/Review

A visually stunning war/adventure masterpiece that is probably one of the best yet most intense action movies I have seen in a while. During the horror of World War I (in April 1917), two soldiers are sent on a risky and practically impossible adventure over enemy territory to send a vital message to prevent an attack that will lead to almost 1,600 men dying due to a deadly trap in a captivating and breathtaking race against time. The true artistry of 1917 is the technical aspects such as the cinematography all made to look like it is filmed in one scene (even though there are cuts) as well as the sound, beautiful but horrific period sets and intense/realistic visual effects that reflect how deadly World War I really was. World War I is an event that is easily forgotten especially in film due to the little known, therefore 1917 finally conveys a modern touch on the information about the Great War and stunningly describes it in a somehow different way than most other movies about World War I or World War II. However, the storyline of 1917 is also incredibly flowing and a spectacular show of superb writing that grabs the audience's attention (and breath) and never lets go even in the ending with a rather open ending, creating the heart stopping idea in the film. The story mainly centers on the adventure and the places they go and struggles they face to deliver the information and survive especially with the brutality that is constantly occurring everywhere. This movie is seriously intense to a point when I don't think anyone can lose attention and really never has any breaks but continued to build upon each unfolding event, crating the very simplistic but multi-layered storyline. The character development throughout the plot is probably the weakest part of the movie and really struggles especially in the middle, however a decision made by the writing team was to not tell the audience about the main character until the end of the movie which is a decision I still disagree with because the character never reaches full depth. In addition, I would say the movie is too intense and needs connection scenes to allow the plot to flow even better than it already does and allow the audience to catch a breath for a minute.
The acting is powerful in an average way but the scenes are all exceptionally  directed where each scene is almost shot perfectly with little doubt in the audience. Another thing I truly enjoyed about the movie was the score as it's horrific and involved music creates the true feeling of war that contributes (among other things) to interact with the audience and really help the audience to feel like they are in the situation of the main character really showing the strength of the movie. My favorite shot and one of the most technically impressive is where the main character is running to the colonel across a battlefield with explosions and gunfires happening all around him because it really expresses his bravery and urgency but danger (also revealing his expression). Finally, the perfect part of the movie is the message delivered that some people just want the fight, showing that some people simply want the war and violence without compromise. The movie's many aspects create an excellent plot, great characters and truly immersive experience that will leave audiences speechless and stunned to their very core. This makes an exceptional and artistic film that not only will show the horrors of war or the great new technology in movies, but also reflects on a horrible part of history which not many other movies have attempted to convey. Overall, 1917 is one of the best films of the year and one of the best war films I've seen as it is an emotional, breathtaking, technically impressive, captivating, entertaining, stunning but highly intense film of one dangerous adventure during World World 1's horrors.
